Sandals Jamaica hosts Upcycling Workshop

Waste build up can have a negative impact on the environment and the beauty of a community. To ensure this does not happen, The Sandals foundation in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) decided to introduce the Solid Waste Reduction project in the Whitehouse and Bluefields communities in Westmoreland. This project, which has been taking place over the last 14 months, introduced waste separation, plastic bottle recycling, community composting to community members. Although the project has been reaping success, it created another problem. What do you do with all the waste collected? While trying to figure out a solution, participants found the perfect solution – upcycling.

The restricted movement made it difficult for residents to stock up on well-needed supplies. The Spanish Jamaica Foundation is to donate 200,000 US dollars to the Ministry of Health and Wellness to help in the fight against COVID 19. The Savanna La Mar Hospital in Westmoreland had a challenge treating persons with respiratory illnesses because the nebulizer machines at the hospital stopped working. To fill the gap, members of the key club at Mannings High School decided to raise funds to purchase two new nebulizers for the Hospital’s children’s ward.
