Peace Day Celebrations at Gregory Park Primary

The Gregory Park Primary guidance department on Tuesday March 7 organized a Peace March in the Gregory Park community in observation of National Peace Day.  The event was observed under the theme “Be the Peace”. Principal of Gregory Park Primary, Richard Williams says his students were being used as instruments of peace to help address the high levels of violence and crime that have been taking place in the area.

New Completion Date To Be Identified For The Census

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) is looking to identify a new date for the completion of the ongoing 2022 Population and Housing Census. The undertaking, which commenced last September, was slated to end on March 31 but according to STATIN Director General, Carol Coy, several administrative issues slowed the pace at which the data collection exercise was progressing. Those have since been addressed.

STEM and Gender Equality

Increasing the participation of women in the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) industry has been a topic of discussion for many years now, both locally and globally.  Recently, UN Women and the United Nations decided to help tackle this issue by observing International Women’s Day 2023 under the theme “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.”  JIS Radio caught up with three STEM practitioners, Dominique Nelson, Abigail Morgan and Ryhane Roberts, who shared their views on global and local inclusion of women and girls in STEM, and also suggested ways the gender gap can be narrowed.

Mental Health and You

The phrase mental health has become a buzz word around the world in recent years. Numerous celebrities have been highlighting the issue, including the likes of tennis pro Naomi Osaka, who took time off from playing to take care of her mental health and many time Olympic gold medallist Michael Phelps who has consistently championing the value of therapy in his achieving success.

Right here in Jamaica several initiatives have been undertaken to help people improve their mental health, including the establishment of wellness benches, and the launch of the U Matter chatline.

Even with all this, how much do you really know about mental health? To help us gain greater clarity and provide some useful tips for addressing personal issues is Consultant Psychologist Doctor Jason Winter.
