Jamaica has an aging population. In addition, our birth rate is on the decline. This presents a unique challenge, especially with non-communicable diseases also on the rise. The response by the Government, is a comprehensive program geared at meeting the needs of older people.
The first part of the plan is the launch of geriatric clinics in the parishes of St. Ann and St. Catherine this year. Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton, says the intention is to build out a policy approach to dealing with persons over 60 and the particular needs that they have. The facilities will be situated at community and district health centres.
