“As the nation is aware, we are under the threat of Tropical Storm Chantal.
This afternoon, I convened a meeting of the National Disaster Committee to assess our state of readiness should the country be affected by the approaching Storm.
While the current forecast could be considered favourable in terms of possible strengthening of the system as it approaches the island, the eastern parishes in particular can expect to experience heavy rainfall and possible flood conditions. I have instructed that the necessary preparations and contingency plans be put in place for activating at short notice, should this become necessary. We cannot predict the impact the system could have on the island and so I ask everyone to be prepared.
In making preparations for any eventuality, I urge you to especially consider the children, the sick, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and the most vulnerable in the society. I call on all Jamaicans to make all the preparations necessary for your safety and that of your family and property.
Please listen to the bulletins that will be issued during the afternoon and into tonight, and heed the advisories from the Met Service and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, on this approaching storm. Let us pray for God’s protection of our people and country.”
