Advancing Women’s Healthcare in Jamaica

June 2, 2026

The Full Story

The Government of Jamaica (GOJ) is supporting women’s health — from adolescence through the childbearing years and into healthy ageing. The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) prioritises the prevention of non-communicable disease (NCD), as well as improving reproductive health, mental health and general wellness of women.

In keeping with this commitment, the Ministry continues to implement initiatives aimed at reducing the incidence of cervical cancer, safeguarding reproductive health and equipping health facilities to manage menopause among Jamaican women.

HPV Vaccination Efforts

Globally, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the major cause of cervical cancer in women. In Jamaica, current estimates indicate that 386 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year. The MOHW promotes the prevention of cervical cancer by encouraging more frequent cervical screening and HPV testing for women ages 21-65. The MOHW has also made the HPV vaccine available free of cost at community health centres since October 2017.

Reproductive Health

In July 2025, the GOJ, in collaboration with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), officially launched the National Population and Sustainable Development Policy (NPSDP). This policy aims to tackle demographic concerns — including low fertility, emigration and population ageing.

Menopausal Healthcare

Menopause marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years. It is a natural transition that deserves comprehensive, compassionate care. The MOHW has recognised that the perimenopausal period (transitional stage before menopause) is a significant factor affecting women’s well-being. The Ministry has established a team to focus on a standardised and clinical response to these challenges – through public education and outreach, as well as training of healthcare workers to treat menopausal patients.
