Leaders of community-based organisations in St. Catherine will receive plaques and certificates on Sunday, December 16, for their outstanding contribution to community development in the parish.
The leaders who were selected from organisations in 49 communities will be presented with their awards at a ceremony on the grounds of the SDC’s office in Spanish Town.
The event, which begins at 3:00 p.m., is being organized by the SDC Region Five office in St. Catherine. Guest speaker will be Professor Barry Chevannes, former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies.
Co-ordinator of the event and Regional Human Resource Manager at the SDC, Region Five, Sandra Goulbourne told JIS News that the leaders were judged on the number of years served as leaders of their organizations as well as their “consistent involvement in spearheading projects or activities that were geared toward the social upliftment of the communities.”
She pointed out that the names of outstanding leaders and their achievements were submitted to a Selection Committee by community development officers who worked with the leaders in their respective communities, after which committee members met with persons from the various communities to verify the leaders’ contribution.
Additionally, Miss Goulbourne said the SDC would recognise several private sector businesses that support “initiatives in these communities and which have been significant partners in community development.”
Another category of awards is the Exemplary Leadership award which will be presented to four outstanding persons in community development. Persons nominated in this category must “demonstrate exemplary leadership and volunteerism,” she emphasized.
