Chief Personnel Officer in the Office of the Services Commissions, Charles A. Jones has announced the appointment of Maria Jones as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture with effect from May 9, 2005.
Mrs. Jones, who has many years experience in both private and public sector management, was formerly Chief Executive Officer of the Management Institute for National Development (MIND). Prior to that she held senior management positions at the Business District Limited, and Air Jamaica, where she worked for 21 years.
She currently chairs the Board of the National Gallery of Jamaica, and is a member of several Boards, including Capital and Credit Merchant Bank and HEART Trust/NTA.
Mrs. Jones has a proven track record in transformational management, as evidenced by her steering MIND through public sector reform, resulting in a customer-focused, operationally improved Executive Agency. One of the significant accomplishments at MIND during Mrs. Jones’ tenure was the establishment of MIND Online – internet-based learning directed from the Old Hope Road campus. This saw the implementation of Jamaica’s first fully online Associate of Science degree (Management Studies).
As Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture, Mrs. Jones will focus on implementing the recommendations of the Education Transformation Task Force.
While all areas of the Ministry’s portfolio will receive attention, she has declared her intention to place strong emphasis on technology, “to optimize resource productivity, enable improvements in learning and enhance the delivery of education”.
The Permanent Secretary is also looking forward to putting in place autonomous Regional Authorities, and other support entities, which will collectively lead the planned improvement of education in Jamaica.
Additionally, she will be spearheading efforts to improve the building and facilities at the Ministry’s Kingston headquarters at National Heroes Circle and at the Caenwood Centre on Arnold Road.
Mrs. Jones holds the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and the Bachelor of Science degree in Management Studies, both from the University of the West Indies.
