Seville Heritage Expo Returns

Alando Terrelonge (left), presents George Malcolm Walker (centre), who represented Joel Miller, with an award for first place for the film ‘Hairport’, during an awards ceremony for the 2022 FiWi Short Film Competition, held on September 29, at the Palace Cineplex in Sovereign Centre, St. Andrew. At right is Acting Executive Director, Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), Marjorie Leyden-Kirton. The FiWi Short Film Competition is a brainchild of the JCDC’s Drama and Theatre Arts Unit, which encourages Jamaican amateur filmmakers to examine one of five selected Jamaican proverbs and create a short film treatment, based on their interpretation. This year marks the second staging of the competition, which started in 2021.

Louise Bennett-Coverley (“Miss Lou”), at National Heroes Park in Kingston, on September 7. The ceremony is one of several commemorative activities celebrating the l03rd anniversary of her birth. Born September 7, 1919, Miss Lou was a Jamaican folklorist, writer of poetry, songs, performer and educator. Dr. Bennett-Coverley is widely considered one of the most important purveyors of Jamaican culture. She died July 26, 2006.
