Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Honourable Professor Kenneth O. Hall announced today (September 1), that Burchell Whiteman, has joined the team in his office.
A release from King’s House informs that Mr. Whiteman, who recently retired from the Government after 17 years as Minister of Education and subsequently, Minister of Information, brings to the Office of the Governor-General vast knowledge in several disciplines.
Throughout his long and distinguished career in education and representational politics, he gained a wealth of experience in legislature and good governance, the release notes. These skills will be of benefit to the special projects being undertaken by the Governor-General towards:
Promoting Jamaica’s identity and sovereignty as an independent nation;
Celebrating excellence, achievement and service; and
Encouraging and facilitating information-sharing and networking in order to advance the development process in Jamaica.
The release explains that Mr. Whiteman will play a significant role in the implementation of these projects, which will include the Governor-General’s Youth Award for Excellence and King’s House Development Forum. The projects are consistent with the Governor-General’s intention to be an active participant in forging national consensus, in building social capital and projecting a self-reliant and self-confident Jamaica.
