The National Meteorological Service has advised the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) that the Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Jamaica. Although the eye of the Hurricane will not pass directly over the island, hurricane force winds could affect Northern parishes and the entire country will get heavy rainfall.
The public is being reminded that if they live in an area which has been flooded in the past they should be on the alert for potential flooding and move either to a shelter or stay with relatives and friends. This must be done before all evacuation routes are cut off.
The Parish Disaster Committees are being asked to remain on the alert and to ensure that their teams are in place to mobilize at short notice. The National Emergency Operations Centre is currently activated and can be reached by calling 928-5111-4. In addition the Ministry of Local Government and Environment has activated their Emergency Operations Center and can be reached toll free at 1-888- 991-4617 and 754- 8497, 754-8497.
Persons who live in low-lying and flood prone areas are being asked to observe the following precautions:
