The Full Story

The Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment has donated three new Yamaha motorcycles to the Negril Police Station in Westmoreland.

The bikes are among several acquired by the Ministry for deployment to police stations in resort areas, through a $4.3 million allocation from the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF).

At the handing over ceremony held on Friday (August 29), portfolio Minister, Hon. Dr. Wykeham McNeill, informed that he has been working closely with the Minister of National Security, Hon. Peter Bunting, over the last two years, to improve the mobility of the police, as part of the crime fighting effort.

As a result of that partnership, the police force has benefited from donations of motorcars, and a decision was made this year to provide motorbikes.

“We have been able to acquire the amount of $4.3 million from the TEF and out of that, we have bought motorcycles for the police force, but three of those will be housed here in Negril,” he noted.

He informed that the TEF has also allocated some $25 million for the repair of the Negril Police Station, with the work to start by August 31.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police for Area 1, Gary Griffiths, who accepted the bikes, expressed appreciation to Minister McNeill for the timely gifts.
