Tourism Awareness Week kicks off on Sunday (September 25) with a Thanksgiving Service at the Montego Bay New Testament Church of God in St. James, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
The Week, slated for September 25 to October 1, will incorporate the observance of World Tourism Day on September 27, under the theme ‘Rethinking Tourism’.
“Tourism Awareness Week offers a period of reflection… when we can pause to take a harder look at how we have been making this great industry valuable to our people,” said Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, at a recent Jamaica Information Service (JIS) ‘Think Tank’.
He further informed that this year’s World Tourism Day theme will also guide Jamaica’s activities for Tourism Awareness Week… “as we continue to raise awareness of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value”.
Meanwhile, Senior Director, Corporate Communications in the Ministry of Tourism, Kingsley Roberts, shared that among the activities being hosted is a Style Jamaica Runway Show.
The event will take place on Monday, September 26 at the Breezeway, between 60 and 64 Knutsford Boulevard, New Kingston.
“The aim of the fashion show is to showcase local talents who have used Jamaica 60 as the muse for their creations,” said Mr. Roberts, adding that participants will be exhibitors from the 2022 staging of the Christmas in July tradeshow, hosted by the Tourism Linkages Network.
Other activities for the Week include daily advertorials highlighting the initiative of the Ministry and the public bodies that foster innovation in tourism, speaking engagements at schools across Jamaica, and the virtual Edmund Bartlett lecture series on Sunday, September 25.
There will also be a tourism opportunities visionary symposium on Tuesday, September 27; a youth forum on Wednesday, September 28; a special virtual knowledge forum on Thursday, September 29; and the official launch of the tourism innovation incubator on Friday, September 30.
