Six thousand young people were engaged in 2021, under the Youth Summer Employment Programme.
They were deployed across the country to assist in implementing the COVID-19 support programme, under the guidance of the Social Development Commission (SDC) and the municipal corporations.
This was in addition to their work in collecting data about street lights, traders, car marts, garages, building construction, old and dilapidated buildings, and emergency assistance.
“Some of these young people were retained by the local authorities and have now gained permanent employment with the local authorities. We intend to continue with the programme this year and, hopefully, we are looking to improve on the numbers,” Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, has said.
He was making his contribution to the 2022/23 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives, on May 25.
The Youth Summer Employment Programme was launched in 2017, in an effort to help reduce youth unemployment.
