The Full Story

On Tuesday (Aug. 19) close to 200 primary, secondary and tertiary students in Manchester and Clarendon, received book supplies and bursaries from Jamalco, at a back-to-school ceremony, held at the Pratville Infant and Primary School in Manchester.
The gifts, which total just under $1 million, were given to students who reside in the company’s mining areas. In attendance were officials of the company, community leaders, and parents of the students.
Motivational speaker, and lecturer at the Northern Caribbean University (NCU), Patrick Smith, encouraged the students to always view themselves as winners.
“You were born to win, so as you embark on another education journey, light your star and make good use of the books and money that Jamalco has made available to you, and I want to give my appreciation to this good corporate citizen for investing in education,” Mr. Smith said.
Meanwhile, geologist at the company, Damian Williams, said that parents were the first teachers and they should play an active role in the children’s educational development.
“At Jamalco, it is part of our vision to create exceptional value for our customers, partners, workforce and communities, and today’s event is about fostering the development of our young people,” Mr. Williams stated.
He added that, “education, like any other investment needs to be nurtured, fed, and protected, so as parents you must positively influence your children’s lives and ensure that they attend school regularly – this will allow them to achieve a solid and positive foundation for the future.”
