The Full Story

The eighteenth staging of the St. Mary Agri Expo will be held at the James Bond Beach in Oracabessa from March 27-28.

This year’s show will be held under the theme: ‘Agriculture and Tourism: A Partnership for Progress’.

It was cancelled last year due to the outbreak of the Mocho Disease, which affected the banana industry.

The show is being organized by the St. Mary Association of Branch Societies of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), in association with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) and Beaches Boscobel Resort and Golf Club.

One of the main objectives of the event is to highlight the linkages between agriculture and tourism.

Organizer for the JAS in St. Mary, Cavonn Murdoch told JIS News that in addition to highlighting the extent of the diversity of agricultural production in St. Mary, the show will demonstrate the level of recovery which has occurred in the parish since the passage of Hurricane Ivan in September of last year.

She noted that the show would enable the sponsors to display and market their products in booths, which would be established for that purpose, adding that the event would also feature agro-processing, horticultural exhibits, livestock production, the St. Mary Farm Queen competition, the St. Mary Champion Farmer competition and Youth in Agriculture competition.

Miss Murdoch is appealing to residents of the parish to attend the show, emphasising that their support would also serve as an encouragement to the farmers to increase agricultural production.

Among the sponsors of the show are: Antilles Chemicals, St. Mary Co-op Credit Union, NEM Insurance, Happy Ice, the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Nutra Mix, Agro Grace, the Jamaica Livestock Association and Plantation Tours.
