St. James Municipal Corporation to Plant 50 Trees at Salt Spring Primary and Maldon High Schools

Members of the St. James Municipal Corporation will be planting some 50 trees at Salt Spring Primary School and Maldon High School in the parish on Labour Day, Tuesday, May 23.

This was disclosed by Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Leeroy Williams, while delivering remarks during a Workers’ Week Church Service on Sunday (May 21).

The service, which was held at St. Augustine Anglican Church in Coral Gardens, St. James, was organised in collaboration with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC).

Councillor Williams also advised that the Corporation will be upgrading the pedestrian crossing at Alice Eldemire Drive, in the vicinity of the Montego Bay Community College and Herbert Morrison Technical High School.

He indicated that Councillors will also be planting trees in their respective divisions across the parish and will engage in other Labour Day activities.

The Mayor encouraged citizens to get involved in projects in their homes and schools, among other places, emphasising that it was imperative to “do what we can to bring back and maintain the [Day’s] true meaning”.

For his part, Custos Rotulorum for St. James, Bishop the Hon. Conrad Pitkin, lauded the nation’s workers for being the “driving force” behind Jamaica’s progress.

“We take the time to recognise their dedication, hard work and sacrifice. It’s important to acknowledge the sacrifices our workers have made. Despite the obstacles and difficulties, workers have remained steadfast in their commitment to Jamaica, and for this we are truly grateful,” he expressed.

“As we look forward to Labour Day, let us remember the reason and purpose of this important day. Labour Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of our workers, and it is also a time to come together as a community and nation,” Custos Pitkin added.

Worker’s Week is being observed from May 14 to 23 under the theme ‘Celebrating 85 Years of Labour Relations in Jamaica’.

The week culminates on Labour Day, which will be observed under the theme ‘Plant a Tree for Life – Promoting Climate Change Mitigation, Food Security and Road Safety’.
