The Social Development Commission SDC has awarded grants totaling 1.1 million dollars to support the economic stability of several small entrepreneurs and micro-businesses in St. James. The grants were presented to 22 small enterprises or Local Economic Initiatives LEIs, during a handover ceremony and workshop, at the SDC St. James Office in Albion.

Green Island Primary School in Hanover is encouraging the development of healthier children, by launching its Jamaica Moves Club. The club will promote physical activity and proper nutrition among students.

With obesity rates among children a concern, the Government continues to look towards preventative strategies to curb the condition that has been linked to several non-communicable diseases. The most recent effort comes from State Minister in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Alando Terrelonge, who is encouraging children to take steps to safeguard their health.

The government is working to develop a national eye health plan. Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton says a technical working group in the Ministry, established in 2017, is drafting the plan, which will provide policy and strategic direction for the prevention of blindness and visual impairment in Jamaica.

Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, says rehabilitation work on the main building at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, St. James, is progressing well and is on course for completion by the end of the year.

The resort city of Montego Bay now has 14 newly trained and certified tour guides. The training was done under the Team Jamaica initiative and the Montego Bay City Guides programme, and is part of wider efforts to curb visitor harassment.
