Ground will be broken this year for a Resilience Park in Portmore, as the Government prepares for the municipality to become the country’s 15th parish.
The initiative is part of several infrastructure projects that have been identified for implementation in celebration of the nation’s Diamond Jubilee this year.
Prime Minister the Most Hon. Andrew Holness made the disclosure during his Independence Day message on August 6.
“We recently broke ground for the Montego Bay Perimeter Road Project and, taken together with the improvements to the Sangster International Airport, this will be a lasting legacy for the north-western parishes of the Island,” Mr. Holness said.
“We have started work on the Morant Bay Urban Centre. Coupled with the South Coast Highway Improvement Project, the centre will leave a lasting legacy for the people of the north-eastern parishes,” he added.
Mr. Holness further informed that ground will be broken this year for a new Parliament building “as an iconic symbol of our sovereignty for generations to come.”
“And speaking of sovereignty, we have already commenced work towards becoming a republic,” he said.
Jamaica is observing its 60th year of Independence under the theme: ‘Jamaica 60, Reigniting a Nation for Greatness’.
