The Full Story

The running track at the GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport, in St. Catherine, is to be reconstructed at a cost of US$1.5 million.

Making the disclosure at a Jamaica House press briefing on November 26, Information Minister, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, said the running track at the institution has been declared unfit “and it is imperative that it be replaced as a matter of urgency.”

She noted that the work will involve removal of the existing surface, excavation and installation of the base and sub-base material, rehabilitation of the infield and surface water control works.

“The contractor will carry out the required civil engineering works, site preparation, drainage and the laying of the synthetic surface,” she said.

When completed, Minister Falconer said the GC Foster track is expected to receive Level II International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) certification.

She informed that Cabinet approved the award of the contract through the Sports Development Foundation (SDF), to the Berleburger Schaum-stoff-werk.

The GC Foster College trains student athletes, coaches, and physical education teachers.
