The Manchester Social Development Commission (SDC) is encouraging persons to participate in Labour Day projects across the parish, especially at the Manchester Infirmary, which is the parish project.
SDC parish manager for Manchester, Rose Griffiths, told JIS News that the scope of work will involve cleaning and beautifying the facility and planting food crops that the residents can benefit from in weeks to come.
“We are very pleased that the Parish Council chose the infirmary as the parish project. I will be out there on Labour Day with my staff to work with others so that the residents there can feel more comfortable and have a food garden that they can reap from,” she said.
She informed that the SDC “network in the area is busy mobilizing persons to support the project, and I just want to remind everyone that this is the location where our indigents are housed, and we don’t know what our status in life is going to be, so we need to do the best that we can for those not as fortunate as we are.”
Matron of the institution, Ivy Williams, also welcomed the project. “I don’t believe that they could have decided on a better institution than the infirmary. The help here is needed and we could not have paid for it, so I am grateful that volunteers are coming to plant crops and help us to complete a parameter fence that we started sometime ago,” she told JIS News.
Approximately 96 residents are housed at the Manchester Infirmary, which is located in Grey Ground. Some 13 Labour Day projects have been registered with the Manchester Parish Council.
