The Jamaica 57 Independence Grand Gala has come and gone, but many Jamaicans are still basking in the excitement. As is customary, the day’s events officially began with the arrival of the Governor General, Sir Patrick Allen who was accompanied by his wife Lady Allen. But the Governor General wasn’t the only head of state to grace the event, as this year, Jamaica welcomed President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta. Mr. Keynatta was there to participate in the local launch of the UN declared Decade for People of African Descent.

The Jamaica Stock Exchange comprises ordinary and preference share representing various business sectors including: banking and finance; manufacturing; retail; communications; insurance; leisure; conglomerate; services, agriculture and real estate. Overall there are 12 sectors on the market but there is one in particular that is currently being positioned for greater growth and development.

The 8th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference hosted earlier this year boasted some unique features such as a Day of Service initiative which was carried out on day four of the Conference. Even more unique was the fact that some Day of Service activities were delayed to enable greater reach and impact. One such initiative was the Jamaica Diaspora Agriculture Taskforce (JDAT) Symposium, which was carried out at this year’s Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show which was staged in collaboration with the Jamaica Organic Agriculture Movement (JOAM). Made up of self-styled ‘Foreign farmers’, JDAT is on a mission to get more Jamaican farmers certified in organic farming.

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information is encouraging parents to utilize more technology-based tools as they prepare their children to sit external examinations. State Minister, Alando Terrelonge, says technology is a vehicle to increase parental involvement in the education sector, which is critical to national growth and development.
