Buff Bay Primary School in Portland was abuzz with activities to mark Africa Day 2023 on May 25.  The event was hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Youth. The day’s activities, held under the theme: Celebrating Africa: Sankofa, Return to the Roots, was aimed at sensitizing children about African culture and heritage, and placed emphasis on Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, or Ethiopia.

In 2005 Dr Shalette Ashman became the founder of Jamaica’s first ever online learning program for primary and secondary level students when she conceptualized and launched GoGSAT.com and Caribbean Examination.com in partnership with E-Learning Jamaica.  The GoGsat and CaribbeanExamination online spaces since became vital tools for many students as they prepared for the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) and Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

In 2016, Wayde Van Niekerk was the fastest man in the world over 400m, smashing the men's world record for the event at the Rio Olympics, en route to winning an Olympic gold medal. His historic run lowered the mark by .15 seconds, moving it from 43.18 seconds to 43.03. However, a year later misfortune came as Van Niekerk suffered a serious knee ligament injury, and was later diagnosed with medial and lateral tears of the meniscus and tearing in his anterior cruciate ligament.
