April 1, 2010

The Full Story

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has instructed Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Hon. Dorothy Lightbourne, to seek a declaration from the courts on her obligations before signing extradition orders.
He was speaking on his call-in radio programme, Jamaica House Live, on Wednesday night, March 31.
“I have instructed the Minister of Justice to seek a declaration from the courts of Jamaica, not in relation to a breach of the treaty.but to seek a declaration from the courts as to whether the Minister has (a) the authority, and (b) the obligation to consider breaches of our laws which lead to a breach of the treaty in coming to her decision. And I am hoping that that matter can be placed before the court in a few days,” Mr. Golding said.
The Prime Minister affirmed that the current treaty dispute between Jamaica and the United States of America is over an “imperfection in the application of the treaty,” and that efforts are being made to engage in discussions to resolve the issue.
