Britain’s new High Commissioner to Jamaica, His Excellency Howard Drake has praised Jamaica for its quick and positive response to the Haitian earthquake crisis.
During his courtesy call on Prime Minister the Hon. Bruce Golding at Jamaica House in Kingston this morning, (Jan 22) Mr. Drake said Britain was also committed to playing its part in providing much needed medical services to the Haitian people. Prime Minister Golding used the occasion to update High Commissioner Drake on the Haitian rescue, relief and reconstruction programme. He noted that Jamaica would welcome any assistance from Britain and other donor countries to assist in the effort.
In anticipation of the arrival of Haitians here, Mr. Golding said Jamaica would be setting up camps, providing medical treatment, food and clothing for them until the situation in Haiti had settled down to allow them to be returned to their country safely. “We will be making the arrangements to take them back to Haiti as soon as things have settled down”, he said.
Mr. Golding also expressed Jamaica’s appreciation for the British Government’s programme of co-operation and assistance in the area of crime fighting. “We want to draw on the considerable experience of our UK partners particularly in the area of metropolitan policing as the crime situation continues to be one of our major challenges”, Mr. Golding noted.
