A seminar on the promotion of disaster risk management for journalists, will highlight activities for this year’s observance of Earthquake Awareness Week, which will be held from January 20 to 26.

In an interview with JIS News, Director General of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), Ronald Jackson, said the seminar, set for January 25, will expose journalists to their role in disaster risk promotion.

“The seminar will seek to expose media personnel to their role in disaster risk reduction, not just in terms of reporting, but generally in promoting a disaster risk management culture,” Mr. Jackson said.

He noted further that the seminar will expose members of the media to procedures and policies involved in the management of disasters; the standard operating procedure in relation to national emergency operation centres; and provide a platform for media practitioners and players to share resources, experiences and insights in the whole business of risk communication.

“The media seminar will also help to advance the national capacity for risk and crisis communication,” the Director General said.

Earthquake Awareness Week is observed annually during January, because of the 1993 and 1907 earthquakes, which occurred around the same period.
