Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, arrived in Kingston on Monday (March 17) on an official visit.
The visit, which ends Thursday (March 19), comes at the invitation of the Government of Jamaica and is intended to solidify the bonds of friendship and co-operation between the OAS and Jamaica.
Mr. Insulza will meet with Prime Minister Bruce Golding; Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Dr. Kenneth Baugh; and Minister of National Security, Senator Trevor MacMillan. He will also pay a courtesy call on Jamaica’s new Governor- General, His Excellency the Most Honourable Dr. Patrick Allen, and meet with the Principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus, Professor Gordon Shirley, Jamaica’s previous Ambassador to the OAS.
This will be Secretary General Insulza’s second visit to Jamaica as head of the OAS. This visit is on the eve of the Fifth Summit of the Americas, which is being held in a Caribbean nation, Trinidad and Tobago, for the first time, from April 17 to 19.
The Secretary General says the visit will allow him to discuss issues that will constitute the hemispheric agenda in the coming months, ranging from the impact of the global financial crisis on the hemisphere, April 17 to 19, and the need for a collective and effective response to human prosperity, energy security and environmental sustainability.
