The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says it is pleased with the support received for its inaugural electronic waste (e-waste) mini expo and collection drive, held on International E-Waste Day, October 14.
“We are thrilled with the vast response. It’s clear that our community is passionate about addressing e-waste issues and taking steps to protect the environment,” Community Relations Manager, NSWMA, Kimberly Blair, told JIS News.
A total of 241 household items, office items, toys, and gadgets, among other things, were received.
Persons attending the expo were encouraged to bring their old and unused electronic devices for responsible disposal.
E-waste refers to any equipment with plugs, cords and electronic components that are at the end of their useful life.
Miss Blair expressed the hope that the event will “serve as a springboard for further action and awareness.”
She informed that attendees were also exposed to innovative solutions for e-waste recycling and repurposing by Gates Jamaica.
Gates Jamaica is an organisation that provides educational adventure shaped by fun and free thought. They use graphics, animation, and technology (robotics) to spark interest in learning.
“Visitors had the chance to explore eco-friendly products made from recycled cardboard, e-waste and plastics, including robots operated by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity,” Miss Blair indicated.
The expo, a collaborative effort of local businesses, environmental organisations and government agencies, was held at the NSWMA’s head office at 61 Half-Way Tree Road in Kingston.
International E-waste Day was observed under the theme: ‘Mek Haste and Recycle Yuh E-Waste’.
