The Full Story

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing science education and strengthening partnerships with educators to promote environmental stewardship and sustainability across Jamaica.

The commitment was reiterated at the Association of Science Teachers of Jamaica (ASTJ) Annual Conference, being held from October 26 to 27, at the Ocean Coral Spring Conference Centre in Trelawny.

The event brings together science educators and stakeholders to discuss strategies for strengthening science education and fostering innovation among students.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Chief Executive Officer with responsibility for Environmental Management and Conservation at NEPA, Anthony McKenzie, underscored the critical role of science teachers in shaping the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers and environmental leaders.

Mr. McKenzie noted that fostering scientific literacy and environmental responsibility among students is key to building a more resilient and sustainable Jamaica.

He said collaboration between NEPA and the ASTJ remains vital, as environmental data, policies and practical initiatives can serve as valuable teaching resources and help inspire students to develop solutions to environmental challenges.

“NEPA remains committed to supporting your mission,” Mr. McKenzie told educators attending the conference.

He emphasised that “effective environmental management requires the integration of policy and practice, while highlighting the classroom as an important space for nurturing innovation and cultivating environmental solutions”.

Mr. McKenzie also congratulated the ASTJ on its 76 years of service and contribution to the advancement of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in Jamaica.

He expressed best wishes for a successful conference, encouraging participants to engage in meaningful dialogue, share innovative ideas and renew their commitment to strengthening science education and promoting environmental sustainability.
