The Full Story

Custos of St. Thomas, Hon. Marcia Bennett, has urged Jamaicans to honour the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes and forebears by embracing compassion, service and responsibility in building a better future for generations to come.

Speaking at the National Heroes Day civic ceremony at the Anglican Church Hall in Morant Bay recently, Custos Bennett said Jamaica’s heritage extended beyond its music, language, traditions and faith to include the resilience, determination and willingness to support others in times of need.

“The heritage we celebrate today was shaped by resilient men and women whose courage, sacrifice, creativity, and determination helped to fashion the Jamaica of which we are all proud,” she said.

“We have inherited their music, language, traditions and faith, but also something less tangible, that distinctly Jamaican determination to preserve, pursue excellence, and discover possibilities even amidst difficult circumstances,” she added.

According to Custos Bennett, while the country took pride in the achievements and sacrifices of its forebears, Jamaicans also needed to consider the legacy they were creating for those who would follow.

She pointed to the challenges confronting the nation, including communities rebuilding following the devastation of Hurricane Melissa and individuals dealing with illness, bereavement and economic pressures.

She said these circumstances highlighted the need for greater care and consideration in everyday life, including how people treat each other in their communities and workplaces.

“These circumstances remind us that resilience is not required only in moments of national crisis. It is required every day in our homes, communities, workplaces, and in the choices we make concerning one another,” she underscored.

Custos Bennett further reminded Jamaicans that their forefathers had endured hardships, confronted injustice and built communities to create better opportunities for future generations.

“That heritage now belongs to us and with inheritance comes responsibility,” she said, urging citizens to honour those who came before them by preserving their contributions while making meaningful contributions of their own.

The Custos called for a legacy grounded in compassion, respect, service and responsibility, expressing the hope that future generations would look back on the present generation with the same pride Jamaicans have for their ancestors.
