The National Housing Trust (NHT) must be commended for not only building houses for the private market but also for being significantly involved in social housing projects, says Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness.
Speaking at the opening of the new male ward at the Westmoreland Infirmary on April 26, the Prime Minister said that the NHT is also playing a huge role in community development throughout the country, including in national security.
“The NHT is financing the new social housing programme… they [are making] a contribution to that. They have made contributions to building communities… redeveloping communities that were built… some by them, some by other entities,” he noted.
“They have also been rehabilitating communities that were built some 30 years ago… putting in new roads [and improving infrastructure]. They have also contributed to building police stations to which my constituency benefited from one. The NHT has been making communities safer,” Mr. Holness added.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the NHT contributed much to the $53-million male ward at the infirmary, noting that the facility will be able to house 50 beds, up from the 40 that existed in the old and now defunct section.
“So again, we see where the NHT is providing housing, only that this is in a different form. The agency has been quite active, and again I want to congratulate them,” Mr. Holness said.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has appealed to Jamaicans, notably the private sector, to continue to assist in helping the poor and vulnerable, pointing out that the Government’s budget will never be able to provide all the services that are required.
Mr. Holness said he is aware that times are hard but reminded about the value “in giving” and the feeling of satisfaction in making positive life-changing decisions.
“So, I want to take this opportunity as well, to thank those who have volunteered their time and services in helping their fellow Jamaicans,” the Prime Minister added.
