The Full Story

The Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) and the Ministry of Health are partnering with the Nathan Ebanks Foundation (NEF) to host the second annual Family Expo and Special Needs Resource Fair on the grounds of Hope Gardens, St. Andrew, on Saturday, May 26.

Founder of NEF, Christine Staple-Ebanks, told JIS News that the fair, under the theme ‘Healthy Choices, Healthy Families, Healthy Children’ will bring together members of the disabled community with key service providers.

“The fair is being organised because we find that persons are not aware of what is available to them across services, and, in many instances, service providers in their planning do not include the population with disabilities,” she noted.

“The event seeks to bring everybody together on one platform to have a conversation. It will be an inclusive space for families with or without disabilities, and activities are structured in such a way that everyone in attendance will be able to participate in an inclusive way,” she added.

She is encouraging persons who have family members or know individuals who are disabled to ensure that they attend the fair.

Screening services will be provided by several institutions, such as the Jamaica Psychological Society, the School of Oral Health Science, the Mental Health Unit in the Ministry of Health, the National Parenting Support Commission, the Early Childhood Commission, Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities, and Reading Express.

In addition, the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Jamaica Fire Brigade, Jamaica Public Service, Jamaica Farm Gate E-market, the National Child Month Committee, along with other entities, will be on hand to lend their support

Mrs. Staple-Ebanks explained that the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation’s participation will focus on safety and climate change as it pertains to persons with disabilities.

Admission and access to all the services are free.  Gates open at 10:00 a.m. and the day’s activities will culminate with a one-hour concert at 5:00 p.m. featuring the Genesis Academy Drummers.
