The Full Story

Thirteen community stalwarts from the County of Cornwall were on Thursday (May 24) presented with the 2018 Governor-General’s Achievement Awards (GGAA).

During a ceremony held at the Melia Braco Village Resort in Rio Bueno, Trelawny, the award recipients were lauded for their selfless contributions to their country and respective communities through their “unwavering dedication and hard work”.

Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, described the eight men and five women honoured as “some of Jamaica’s finest”, noting that “they have used their God-given talents to make their communities, and, by extension, their country, better places to live and raise families”.

“These are our own Jamaicans, who have selflessly taken the necessary action where they have embarked on activities that have inspired others. They have now become peddlers of hope within their communities. They have made tremendous sacrifice to also achieve academic success,” he noted.

The Governor-General said he is extremely heartened to see so many men among the list of those recognised “at a time when the men in the west are observed as being involved in sometimes activities that are concerning to all Jamaicans”.

He noted that since the award programme was established some 28 years ago, more than 920 awards have been presented and where “thousands of individuals and many communities have been transformed”.

The award recipients are Tahir Hanieff Thompson and Gerline Nelson from St. James; Deandra Sutherland, Stevon Sheriffe and Lackett Cuff from St. Elizabeth; Nile Anderson, Cliff Reynolds and Moses Chybar from Westmoreland; Ashleigh Jacobs, Dr. Tanika Curry and Hermena Bucknor from Hanover; and Nicholas Rose and Errol Campbell from Trelawny.

The GGAA was established to acknowledge the meaningful contributions of individuals at the community level and to celebrate the success of persons who volunteer, while highlighting the impact of the recipients on community and national life.
