April 13, 2009

The Full Story

A provision of $150 million has been made in the 2009/2010 budget, for flood damage, under the Local Government Disaster Management Programme.
Of the amount, $100 million will go toward drain cleaning, while the remainder is for emergency repairs to roads damaged by floods.
Meanwhile, $51.3 million has been allocated for planning and development under the Local Government Reform Programme.
The provision will go towards developing a viable and vibrant system of Local Government administration, which will provide citizens with greater opportunity to participate in the management of local affairs. It will also help to provide local services and regulatory functions that are responsive to the needs of citizens, and satisfy local conditions.
Also, under Local Government Reform, $15 million has been allocated to facilitate the maintenance and rehabilitation of selected infirmaries island-wide. In addition, $3 million has been provided to facilitate the transportation of water to parishes that are experiencing severe drought conditions.
Meanwhile, an allocation of $7 million has been made to the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) for improvement works on landfills, bridges, and roadways at the Riverton City Dump.
