Minister of Finance and the Public Service, the Hon. Audley Shaw, left Jamaica today(May 12) for London, where he will headline the list of speakers for this year’s “Outlook for the Future” a series of economic forums hosted by the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) under the theme, “The Economic Imperatives for Jamaica 2009.”
Mr. Shaw welcomed the opportunity to update the Jamaican Diaspora in the UK on developments in the country and, in particular, provide highlights of the 2009/2010 Budget.
“Private sector initiatives such as these harmonise with the efforts of successive administrations to maintain and strengthen the relationship between our people at home and those abroad. I am particularly pleased to be associated with this year’s series of forums, which comes in the wake of the still unfolding global financial crisis and our efforts to stabilize and grow the Jamaican economy during these challenging times,” the Minister said prior to his departure.
Mr. Shaw added that Jamaicans in the Diaspora must not be seen as mere benefactors, but as an invaluable group and a vital source in the economic growth of their homeland.
The forums will target Jamaicans in the United Kingdom and North American Diaspora. They will start in the UK on May 15 and 16; and continue in North America, with sessions in Florida and New York, USA, June 4 and 6; and Ontario, Canada, on June 26.
Since its inception in 2003, “Outlook for the Future” has become one of the primary vehicles for Jamaica’s national leaders to interact with a wide cross-section of Jamaicans in the Diaspora. This year’s forums are timely, because they follow immediately after the Budget Debate in Jamaica; and, therefore, offer a special context for meaningful dialogue.
In the United Kingdom, the forum will be held in Birmingham at the Council House, Birmingham City Council, Victoria Square, on Friday May 15, starting at 7:00 p.m.; and in London at the Royal Geographical Society, Kensington Gore, also at 7:00 p.m.
This is the fifth year that Jamaica National has mounted “Outlook for the Future”. Over the years, leaders of the Government and key public sector Executives have headlined the forum.
Some of the previous speakers in the series have included the current Prime Minister the Hon. Bruce Golding, when he was Leader of the Opposition; Dr. Omar Davies, former Minister of Finance and Planning; Dr. Peter Phillips, former Minister of National Security; Dr. Carlton Davis, former Cabinet Secretary; and Mr. Lucius Thomas, former Commissioner of Police.
