The Full Story

Councillor for the Ocho Rios Division, Michael Belnavis, was sworn in as Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay, during a ceremony held on March 7 at the St. Ann Municipal Corporation.

Fifteen other Councillors, including Deputy Mayor and Councillor for the Gibraltar Division, Cardell Wickham, were also sworn in.

In his remarks, Mr. Belnavis said he was happy to be back following his resignation four years ago.

“I am here to work hand in hand with all residents…. This is not the time for any gloating, but the time to get back to doing the people’s business. I just want to focus on the work I had started…and having that chance now to finish up,” Mr. Belnavis said.

He stated that he was encouraged by the number of hotel development and other activities taking place, while urging residents to capitalize on the available opportunities and continue to make St. Ann the place of choice “to live and to do business.”

Mr. Belnavis also committed to providing residents with quality infrastructure, focusing particularly on improving road conditions and ensuring access to clean, potable water for all.

For her part, Custos of St. Ann, Norma Walters, reminded the Councillors that there was no honeymoon period and that carrying out the people’s work should be the main goal moving forward.

“It will not be easy, but with a clear vision for progress and a determination to serve the community to the best of your ability, the task is not insurmountable,” she noted.

“There is a sense of anticipation and hope for what lies ahead, and you all have it within your power to deliver by working collectively. The future should be one that signifies a new chapter for the community, one marked by cooperation, development, and a shared commitment to enhancing the lives of all who call St. Ann home,” the Custos added.

At the event, several Members of Parliament including Hon. Marsha Smith, Lisa Hanna, Hon. Zavia Mayne and Krystal Lee, also brought greetings.
