The Full Story

The Jamaica Information Service (JIS) recently partnered with several corporate entities to make a donation of sanitation and cleaning supplies to the Mount Olivet Boys’ Home in Walderston, Manchester.

The provisions, which were handed over during a brief ceremony at the Agency’s head office in Kingston on March 1, were facilitated through an initiative of the Finance Department in tandem with sponsors – Action Chemical and Equipment, and IJASS Trading Limited.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the JIS, Enthrose Campbell, highlighted the relationship between the Agency and the Home, recounting notable experiences and milestones both have shared.

“We’ve seen the boys grow. We’ve seen them go through different things. We’ve seen them having good jobs and some of them are moving up, and we want to see them become leaders. Mount Olivet is a part of us. We love the boys. We’ve been with them for [several years] and we will continue for as long as we can,” Ms. Campbell assured.

She said the Boys’ Home is “like a jewel” to the Agency, adding that they remain mindful of the contributions made to the lives of the youngsters.

Company Secretary and Director, Action Chemical and Equipment, Marva Bernard, a former JIS Director with a firm belief in youth development, shared her delight in being a part of the initiative.

“Being asked to be a part of this initiative was a definite ‘yes’ for us and a no-brainer. I really am happy that we are a part of this corporate social responsibility. This is something that I passionately believe in,” she expressed.

Mrs. Bernard added that “this is something that warms my heart and I hope [the donation] will go a little way to ease the [Home’s] expenses.”

In her response, Board Chair and Interim Director at Mount Olivet, Sophia Morgan, who thanked the JIS and the sponsors, described the Agency’s service to the Home as a “ministry”.

“The Home is under the United Church [and] we operate solely on donations and sponsorships, with subventions from the government. So we just want to say thanks to Action Chemicals [and IJASS]. Thanks to JIS, our partner in ministry. We will definitely utilise these [supplies] efficiently,” Ms. Morgan said.

The JIS adopted the Mount Olivet Boys’ Home in 2009 as its main corporate social responsibility initiative, and continues to make donations to and engage the boys in various developmental and outreach programmes.

The Agency aims to positively impact the youngsters’ lives and their re-integration into society, following their transition out of the Home.
