Mandatory Training for PPV Operators

July 12, 2012

The Full Story

It will soon become mandatory for all operators of public passenger vehicles (PPV) to undergo specialised training, in keeping with the provisions of Regulation 120 of the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act (1988).

Making his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in Gordon House on July 10, Minister with responsibility for Housing, Hon. Dr. Morais Guy, said the training will be a joint initiative of the Transport Authority and the HEART Trust/NTA.

“Upon completion, participants will be issued permits, which are similar to the identification cards currently being used by hackney carriage operators,” he said.

In the meantime, Dr. Guy informed that the Government is considering the re-introduction of metered taxi service as part of efforts to upgrade and modernise hackney carriage operations across the island.

He said this is being pursued in order to, among other things, provide for easier identification and regulation of the sector.
