The Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) has established an “Entrepreneur of the Year” award to recognize its most outstanding entrepreneur for the year.

Through the JBDC Business Monitoring programme, which has to date, worked closely with over 215 small business owners, nominees were selected and judged based on a set of criteria. These include: Entrepreneur and Team, Improved Commercial Viability, Market Expansion, Creativity and Innovation and Strategic Direction.

Entrepreneurs, Garry Parrish of Garry’s Concept, Lacey-Ann Bartley of Bartley’s All in Wood and Melissa Preddie of Aviola’s Accessories were the top three (3) nominees selected to receive this award. All entrepreneurs scored above average based on the specified criteria. Lacey-Ann Bartley, copped the award for Most Outstanding Entrepreneur for her family-owned business located in Mandeville.

Bartley’s All in Wood designs, manufactures and sells 100% Jamaican handmade wooden traditional and contemporary furniture, jewellery and home accessories.

The elated Bartley said, “Each piece is a family effort that reflects Caribbean Culture and the emotions and experience of our artists one hand-made inch at a time. Bartley’s is a socially responsible business which provides employment for vulnerable populations and uses the off-cuts of furniture production.”

When asked what motivates her, Bartley stated “she has always dreamt of impacting Jamaica’s economic fortunes. I believe that academics is just as important as business and therefore my approach has always been from a four-pronged stand point; academics, advocacy, production and manufacturing.”

On production strategies, Bartley indicated that, with quality finishes, and personalized service, our products are designed and tested based on the feedback and demands from our customers. As our slogan best puts it, “Outta Many One Wood” we work with an array of wood types including: Cedar, Guango, Mahogany, Blue Mahoe, Poplar, and Pine among others. Our products can be found in over eight shops and salons island-wide.”

As Bartley All in Wood continues its objective to change the landscape of the Jamaican Furniture Industry, the JBDC is proud to see the continued growth and modernization of this small business. The inaugural JBDC Entrepreneur of the Year award 2014 was presented to Bartley at the recent staging of the JBDC Small Business Exposition and Conference held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. For this award, she received the JBDC Entrepreneur of the year Gold Plate, a Digicel Smartphone and a Project Management scholarship from the Project Management Global Institute.
