The Full Story

Justices of the Peace (JPs) are being urged to strengthen their collaboration with law-enforcement agencies to aid in crime prevention and the delivery of justice.

“I want at least 10 Justices of the Peace to be attached to each police station. Your role is vital in ensuring justice is properly served,” says Justice Minister, Hon. Delroy Chuck.

This, he pointed out, is imperative to, among other things, verifying the accuracy of police statements, thereby preventing false testimonies in court proceedings.

The Minister was speaking during a recent commissioning ceremony for newly installed JPs in Clarendon.

Mr. Chuck also encouraged JPs to be proactive in crime-prevention initiatives within their communities.

He additionally expressed the hope for a future where Jamaica records a significant reduction in violent crimes, pointing out that “we all need to work together to make our country a safer place”.

Meanwhile Mr. Chuck encouraged JPs to assist victims of domestic violence by directing them to the appropriate support services.

“One in four persons suffer from abuse, and sometimes it is not physical but emotional,” he said, while urging victims to seek help through the programmes facilitating the appropriate interventions.

Mr. Chuck also encouraged JPs to remain in active service for as long as they are able and engage with the younger generation.

“I met a Justice of the Peace who has served for over 60 years, and at 96 years old, she remains a champion in her community. I urge you all to remain active and committed to your role,” he said.

Mr. Chuck reminded JPs that their influence extends beyond their official duties and urged them to lead by example at all times.
