The Full Story

The Jamaica Information Service’s (JIS) commemorative Jamaica 50 photo album has won an international award in the prestigious Mercury Awards Competition, organized by New York-based firm, MerComm, Incorporated, in the United States.

The publication, titled: “Our Golden Jubilee, Snapshots of Post Independent Jamaica 1962 – 2012”, was selected for the 2012/13 Bronze Award in the Photo Album category, eclipsing some 677 other publications, representing 21 countries, which were vying for one of the top three awards.

Now in its 26th year, the International Mercury Awards Competition recognizes the best outputs in public relations, public affairs and corporate communications, by honouring the hard work of the creative professionals.

Major categories for awards include: Advertising, Annual Reports, Brochures, Custom Publications, Designs, Emerging Media, Magazines, Special Projects, Websites and Writing.

Chief Executive Officer of the JIS, Donna-Marie Rowe, who was pleasantly surprised on receiving notification of the Award, informed that the Golden Jubilee publication was the choice of some of the world’s leading communications specialists.

The commemorative album has been endorsed by the Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, who commended the JIS for its foresight and creativity in producing the publication, during its official launch in July 2012.

In describing it as “timely and welcome”, Senator Falconer pointed out that “with this publication, Jamaicans at home and abroad and friends of Jamaica, have been provided with a unique opportunity to relive some of the special moments in the story of our glorious independence journey.”

MerComm, Inc. is the world’s only independent awards organization dedicated to defining the standards of excellence in the communications field and recognizing the professionals whose work has made outstanding contributions to their organization, corporation, or clients.
