The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has been boosted with the addition of 129 new constables.
They were presented at a Passing Out Parade, held at the National Police College of Jamaica in St. Catherine, on Wednesday (August 28).
In his address at the ceremony, National Security Minister, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, welcomed the new members and emphasised the important role they will play in ensuring public safety and order, vital components in the country’s economic development and social transformation.
“We create the conditions for our citizens to enhance their quality of life and to operate in an area of peace and safety,” he said.
Dr. Chang noted that it has been the Government’s policy and philosophy to strengthen the JCF, recognising that a robust police force is a critical pillar in economic development and social transformation.
“That is why we are so committed that every single police station in this country becomes a centre of excellence,” he said.
The Minister emphasised that the physical condition of the work environment must be conducive for the duties carried out by the police officers and for members of the public who access policing services.
“It means having a communications system that is interconnected and linked to a state-of-the-art command control centre, and it means having access to fit-for-purpose reliable motor vehicles to ensure high police visibility and timely responses to emergencies,” he said.
Noting that the Government has been steadily and strategically investing in the JCF over the last six years, Dr. Chang said this is in line with its mandate to modernise and equip the Force with the tools necessary for practical and effective policing.
“Today you are entering a police force where modern facilities and accessible police tools are expected to be the norm. You will experience a force that is being equipped with the tools that are needed to carry out your duties effectively. We are providing digital solutions and advanced technologies to build and operate in the 21st Century police force,” the Minister said.
