Jamaica’s Optoelectronic Technology Expert Confident Ahead of Awards Ceremony

WorldSkills Jamaica Optoelectronic Technology expert, Martin Plummer, has expressed satisfaction with the performance of Jamaica’s competitor, Brandon Brown, at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China.

In an interview with JIS News on Saturday (Sept. 26), he said Brandon executed well on all four competition days.

“He was able to compete with the best from previous competitions, in terms of nations. So, we had China, Korea, Brasil, we had big name countries competing against. He was able to beat them on some days, I think, go toe-to-toe with them is essentially what I’m saying,” he said.

On day one, competitors were tested on lighting design, lighting installation and optimisation, followed by LED screens on day two.

Decorative lighting installation was the focus of day three while on day four, competitors were tested on automation in the lighting industry using sensors, optical sensors and cameras.

“We’re looking and we’re hoping for the best result for tomorrow. I think he had a very strong performance throughout the competition,” Mr. Plummer said.

Commenting on the final module of the competition, Brandon said he did so well that he completed 30 minutes ahead of time.

“It’s one of those modules that require a lot of thinking and that’s what I’m very good at – critical thinking, so it was by far my favourite module to do…I am very confident that I hit a very high score with that module, so I’m looking forward for that gold medal, hopefully I get it,” he said.
