Jamaican Competitors Assess Their Performance on the Final Day of WorldSkills Shanghai

The clock has stopped on four days of high-level, hands-on display of skill and precision at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China.
The competitors now await the results, which will be revealed during Sunday’s (Sept. 27) closing ceremony at the Shanghai World Expo Cultural Center.
Jamaica’s Autonomous Mobile Robotics competitor, Rayon-Jai Pusey, is confident that the team did well.
Fault finding and commissioning were the focus of the final day of competition in this skill.
Commissioning is the final, critical phase in the hardware and software deployment lifecycle where a robotic system is transitioned from a state of construction or installation to full production.
“We did great today. We did pretty good. One of our skills in Jamaica is to be able to fix problems, so you know, we mashed it up,” he said.
He explained that the team had a lot of issues which were resolved on the last day, enabling them to rack up some points.
“We did well, we did everything to the best of our ability. In the end, we found out that most of the issues that we’ve been having, have been just the environment, especially the network that has been giving us huge problems since day two, but we kept pushing, kept fighting. Wi likkle but we tallawah,” Rayon-Jai said.
His teammate, Antonio Rolong, said the team’s performance on the final day was good in comparison to previous days.
“We performed our best today. Hopefully, that is enough,” he said.
Meanwhile Omar Cockett, who is competing in one of the newest skills, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), summed up his performance on the final day as fair.
“There were definitely more challenges than I anticipated. All in all, I got the job done. I did the task. There was an error with my code and so the drone did the opposite of what it should have done, but the task was completed still,” he said.
ICT Network Infrastructure competitor, Courtenay Ferguson, said he learned a lot from participating in the global competition.
He said that the final day was focused on troubleshooting and discovering networks using a WiFi radar.
Courtenay found the WiFi radar challenge to be simple, so too, identifying cable faults.
“Troubleshooting the patch problems was one of the more difficult sections of the day. I was not prepared for the speed challenge, but it was interesting to see how the top three competitors for that challenge ended up winning. I wouldn’t really call this a satisfactory day, but I learnt a lot from it,” he shared.
He disclosed that grading of the test projects considered cleanliness, measurement, completion and functionality.
“I got [points] mostly [for] functionality and measurement…I violated safety precautions a few times, but otherwise I think I did pretty well,” he said.
