How to Acquire Government Land

The Full Story

Owning or leasing Crown Land, which is, land owned by the Government of Jamaica (GOJ), is a viable option for Government Ministries, Agencies and Departments (MDAs), as well as private entities and citizens. These types of land purchases or leases can be used for agricultural purposes, development projects, or personal use and are under the authority of the Commissioner of Lands while the National Land Agency (NLA) manages the allocation and sale or lease of these properties.

Application Process

The following steps are to be taken when seeking to acquire Crown Land:

  • Step 1 – Identify Available Lands

When Crown Land becomes available, the Estate Management Division of the NLA will advertise the listing publicly. Applicants can also contact the NLA offices to find additional properties for purchase or lease.

  • Step 2 – Submit Application Form

Once suitable land has been identified, interested persons must download and submit application forms, which are available on the NLA website free of cost.  The form requires information such as how the land is currently being used, the proposed use of the land, personal/business details, and source of payment.

  • Step 3 – Evaluation and Approval

After the application form is submitted, it will be examined by the relevant authorities at the NLA. If approved, the applicant will be contacted.

  • Step 4 – Negotiate Terms and Complete Purchase or Lease Agreement

Negotiations will begin regarding the price, any conditions of use, and the duration of the lease, if applicable.

Additional information might be required such as obtaining permits for development or adhering to environmental regulations.
