Get the Facts Turning Trash into Cash – The Plastic Bottle Refund Deposit Scheme

February 20, 2019

The Full Story

Want to earn cash for your trash? Well, that is the guarantee of the Jamaican Government’s Plastic Bottle Refund Deposit Scheme; for each empty plastic bottle turned over, it will be cash back in your pocket. The programme, which is being introduced to curb littering and encourage recycling, will be spearheaded by Recycling Partners Jamaica Limited (RPJ), Jamaica’s national recycling organisation and will get off the ground by mid-2019.

How will the Scheme Work?

If you wish to join the fight against plastic pollution and earn at the same time, you will be required to register with RPJ Limited as an account holder. This can be done by visiting their headquarters at Lakes Pen Road, St. Catherine, or by emailing a request to recyclingpartnersjaltd@gmail.com.

Once that process is completed, you may collect and take your empty bottles to RPJ designated collection points. RPJ also has depots in Mandeville, Manchester; Whitehall, Westmoreland; Greenwood, St James; and Port Maria, St Mary.

How Much do You Stand to Earn?

The initial $1 per 600 ml bottle will jump to $3 per bottle by September 2019. Rebates for other sizes will be revealed soon.

Why Should You Buy into the Government’s Plastic Bottle Refund Deposit Scheme?

Aside from an easy extra wad of cash you will be helping to:
• Rescue the environment from pollutants.
• Reduce the possibility of flooding caused by bottles and other debris clogging waterways.
• Contribute to reducing drastically the random dumping of an estimated 600 million polythene terephthalate (PET) bottles each year.
• Foster a culture of recycling, reusing and repurposing ‘garbage’.
