IDB Commits $96 Million to Inner City Improvements This Year

The Government is to implement an Urban Renewal Project(URC) this year, funded by the Inter American Development Bank(IDB), which is aimed at improving the quality of life in inner city communities in Kingston.
The project, which falls under the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce(MIIC) has been given $96 million in the 2009/10 Estimates of Expenditure to: strengthen community based organisations; upgrade housing and environmental conditions; and, foster employment opportunities and business activities in these areas.
Targets for 2009/10 include: community sensitization and organization; upgrade of shelter and improvement of the environment; support for the development of economic activities; and, institutional capacity building for community-based organisations and non-governmental organisations.
It is scheduled to be conducted April, 2009 to March, 2010 and is to be implemented by the Ministry.
