The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is advising that continuous rainfall which has been affecting sections of the island has resulted in disruption to normalcy in the Northern region. The parishes of Portland and St. Mary have been experiencing intermittent bouts of rain associated with a trough in the islands vicinity

Parish Updates

St. Mary

  • Reports of inundation at the Tryall Fording have been received. The road is accessible to single lane traffic. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution.
  • The main road from Galina to Port Maria, in the vicinity of Little Bay, a traditional rock fall area, has had instances of rock fall. The National Works Agency is on location and has cleared the roadway resulting in single lane access
  • A dwelling unit along Relief Road, in the vicinity of Castleton has suffered partial damage as a result of soil saturation from extensive rainfall. There is no report of casualty to occupants of the house.

The Parish Disaster Committee is monitoring the situation and will provide more updates as they become available.

The public is being urged to exercise extreme caution when attempting to access flood prone areas.

FLOOD SAFETY TIPS

  • Listen to the radio or television for information.
  • Be alert and ready to evacuate if flooding threatens
  • Do not attempt to walk through moving water.
  • Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground. You and the vehicle can be swept away quickly.
