The Full Story

Students and teachers of Dunrobin Primary School, in Kingston, are beneficiaries of a new 5,000-gallon water tank valued at $1.8 million.

The Citizen Security and Justice Programme (CSJP) donated $1.1 million, while the school raised $700,000 towards the purchasing of the tank.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Minister of Education, the Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, said that having a good water supply is a good way of keeping schools open every day and ensuring that students and teachers can function appropriately.

“Offering education is one of the very best things that any government can do for its people,” the Minister said.

Rev. Thwaites expressed pleasure having heard of the improvements and the advances taking place at the institution. He also challenged the students to give back to others just as they have received.

“Just as some persons are giving you something at your school, you should think of little ways you can give something to others, your family and friends over the Christmas holiday,” the Minister said.

Also speaking at the ceremony was Senior Community Action Officer for the CSJP, Orville Simmonds, who said that the organisation was most inclined to intervene as there are serious issues associated with students being dismissed from school earlier than normal.

“Your safety is very important to the Ministry of National Security and you are safer here at school, than you would be at home when your parents or guardians are not there. We are very happy to partner with the Ministry, the Member of Parliament and the community,” he said, adding that education continues to be the main vehicle to prevent crime and violence, leading to a safe and secure Jamaica.

Minister of Finance and Planning and Member of Parliament for East Central St. Andrew, Dr. the Hon. Peter Phillips, sent his blessing, thanked the CSJP and extended best wishes to the school community.

Principal of Dunrobin Primary School, Noel Watt, expressed gratitude for the assistance and welcomed the support of the CSJP.

Also expressing gratitude for the tank was a parent of the Dunrobin Primary School, Delitia Crook.

“My children who come to this school, they drink water a lot and so they cannot function without it at school. They also have to use the restroom, and hand washing is very important, so the gesture is well appreciated,” she told JIS News.
