The Gregory Park Primary School in Portmore, St. Catherine got a much needed facelift this morning (May 23), as residents of the municipality came out in their numbers to put work into Labour Day.
Mayor of Portmore, Keith Hinds, participated in the project, which included the painting of the school building and the pedestrian crossing at the front of the school and paving of the compound.
In keeping with the National Labour Day theme: Eat what we grow, grow what we eat’, the school garden was also rehabilitated.
“We are also cleaning the school yard.beautifying the front. We are going to try to do some work on the playfield, we are also going to try to do some work on the driveway. We have dropped some gravel and some sand and matting and so we’ll try to get as much in today as we can,” Mayor Hinds said.
He informed that Gregory Park Square will also get a facelift. “What we are trying to do is to make Gregory Park Square nice (and) look good so that when you drive down here, you can sit down under a shady tree and just cool out, he said.
Turning to the school garden project, Mayor Hinds said that the plot has already been prepared for the planting of vegetables and fruit crops such as tomatoes, okras, cucumber, carrots, apples, cherries, ackees and star apples.
The municipal council provided $250,000 for the project, while a number of individuals and organization made donations. These include Flow, which contributed $50,000 for the purchase of paint, cement, sand, gravel and other material; Trans Jamaican Highway, $35,000; while the Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (RBTT) also gave some funds, the Mayor informed.
Principal of the school, Ivy Jarrett, said she is elated that the institution was chosen for the municipal project and thanked the Mayor, as well as all the volunteers, who offered their assistance.
“This Labour Day project will certainly enhance the teaching and learning environment and we, as a staff, will motivate the students to preserve and appreciate what has been done here,” she stated.
