Greenhouse Being Established at Lennon High

A greenhouse is being established at the Lennon High School in Clarendon for the cultivation of vegetable crops including sweet pepper, lettuce, and tomato.
Work on the project started last year, but was affected by Hurricane Dean in August. It received a boost recently with a $50,000 donation and six-truck loads of top soil from Jamalco. On Labour Day, more than 40 persons from the community, the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), and teachers and students, worked on the flooring of the facility.
Principal of the school, Kenneth Lets, told JIS News that RADA would be putting a covering on the roof that could withstand hurricanes. He said that when the project is up and running, the entire community should benefit.
“This is really an income generating project for our school and to expose the students to new ways of growing crops, but the technology will be available to all the farmers in the area. Jamalco and RADA have been good to us and we want to use what we have gotten to develop the communities surrounding the school,” Mr. Lets said.
Noting that the school also has a 3,000 chicken farm, the Principal said that the institution will also be experimenting with the growing of rice. “We are seeking to go in all areas of agriculture where possible, and make our school self-reliant and earn needed funds,” he stated.
